Three ways to see the GEM

There are three realistic options, and they are not interchangeable. The first is admission bought from the museum's official ticketing site. It covers the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Main Galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs, Khufu's Boats Museum, the commercial area and the exterior gardens. The second is the museum's own guided tour, which adds a guide inside the building. The third is a full-day guided tour from a hotel in Cairo or Giza that bundles museum entry, the Giza plateau, transport and lunch. Which one suits you depends on how much of the day you want arranged for you.

Booking admission directly

The museum's ticketing site states that it is the only official website for buying GEM tickets and that the museum is not responsible for tickets bought on other platforms. The museum's FAQ says all tickets must be booked online in advance with a selected entry time, and that purchases are online only. Prices depend on the ticket type you pick, your nationality and your age, so read them on the ticketing page for your date rather than from a blog. Children under six and visitors with disabilities are exempt from the admission fee, and discounted or free categories need valid ID.

What the official ticket rules mean

The museum's published terms are strict. Tickets are non-refundable after purchase, whichever sales channel you used, except in cases of force majeure as the museum decides. A ticket is valid only for the date and time on it, allows a single entry, and can only be used by the person named in the booking. Re-entry is not permitted once you leave. In practice, book in the traveller's own name, choose a slot you can realistically reach, and keep your confirmation to hand.

The museum's own tour and audio guide

The museum offers a guided tour of about two hours that covers the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs and the Main Galleries. It runs in English and Arabic, and for a private tour in another language the museum refers you to its bookings team. There is also an audio guide in Arabic, English and Japanese, with more than 100 stops and no internet connection needed. The guided tour is a separate ticket type, and even groups exempt from the admission fee pay the difference for it at the ticketing office. Neither option includes the pyramids or transport, so they suit visitors who already have a way to reach the museum and want narration inside it.

The full-day tour: what it includes

The full-day tour linked from this page is a guided day, not a bare entry ticket. It lasts 7 to 8 hours, and the booking calendar shows the starting time for your date. You are collected from your accommodation in Cairo or Giza in an air-conditioned vehicle, with a professional Egyptologist as your guide. The day covers the Giza pyramids, the Great Sphinx and Khafre's Valley Temple, then the Grand Egyptian Museum. Entry tickets for the pyramids-and-Sphinx area and for the museum are included, along with bottled water and lunch at a local restaurant.

• Not included: tips (not mandatory), personal expenses and drinks at lunch
• Going inside a pyramid is not on the inclusions list, so ask before assuming

Languages, pickup areas and what to bring

Live guiding is offered in French, English, German, Italian and Spanish, and you choose the language when you pick a date. There is no Dutch or Portuguese option, so Dutch and Brazilian visitors should choose English or another language from that list. Pickup from accommodation in Cairo and Giza is included. Farther areas, such as Heliopolis, New Cairo, the New Capital and 6th of October City, are listed as an add-on at checkout. Bring your passport or ID; a copy is accepted. Luggage and large bags are not allowed on the tour.

Cancelling and paying

Official museum tickets are non-refundable. The full-day tour has its own terms: booked through GetYourGuide, it can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later. That flexibility is a real difference if your plans are not fixed, but it applies to the tour only, not to a ticket bought from the museum. Because the tour already includes museum entry, buying official admission as well would mean paying twice, so decide which one you need before booking either.

Old reviews describe a different museum

The GEM opened in stages, so reviews and blog posts from before November 2025 can describe a museum with parts missing. The dates below come from the museum's own account of its history and from press reports. The Grand Stairs opened for trial visits, the main galleries followed, and the Tutankhamun Galleries opened last, so check a review's date before trusting what it says you will see. The opening was also postponed more than once before the final date was set.

How to choose

Buy official admission if you want the museum on its own, have your own transport and want to set your own pace. Add the museum's guided tour or audio guide if you want narration inside. Choose the full-day tour if you want the pyramids and the museum in one day without arranging a driver. Note the trade-off: a 7 to 8 hour day shared between the plateau, lunch and the museum leaves less time in the galleries than a stand-alone visit would, so the two suit different kinds of day.

Who this isn't for

If you want most of a day inside the museum, skip the full-day tour and buy official admission. If you need a refundable museum-only ticket, there isn't one, because the museum's terms allow refunds only in cases of force majeure. If you use a wheelchair, the full-day tour is listed as not suitable for wheelchair users, although the museum itself has ramps, lifts and wide pathways. And if you need a Dutch- or Portuguese-speaking guide, neither the full-day tour nor the museum's own tour offers one.
