One ticket, the whole museum
GEM does not run the tiered add-on model common in European museums. The official platform states that admission includes the Tutankhamun Galleries, the Main Galleries, the Grand Hall, the Grand Stairs, Khufu's Boats Museum, the commercial area and the exterior gardens. There is no separate Tutankhamun ticket and no separate solar boat ticket, which is a change from the old arrangement at Giza where the boat had its own museum and its own fee. The booking flow does offer an add-ons step and a distinct guided-tour ticket type, but the headline admission price buys the entire permanent collection.
The price everyone else publishes is wrong
Almost the entire competitive field quotes 1,450 Egyptian pounds for foreign adult admission. Read directly from the museum's own booking system in August 2026, the figure is 1,500. A second widely published figure, 1,700, appeared in launch-day reporting and is also wrong. The 1,500 reading is internally consistent with the Egyptian adult rate of 200 reported by Ahram and Egypt Independent in April 2026. If a page quotes 1,450, it has copied another page rather than checked, which is worth remembering when you weigh anything else it tells you.
Adult begins above 25, not 18
GEM's age bands do not follow the usual pattern and this catches people out at the door. The student rate covers ages 13 to 25 and requires a valid student ID on site. The child rate covers ages 6 to 12. The adult rate applies only above 25. In practice a 24-year-old graduate pays 750 rather than 1,500 Egyptian pounds, provided they can show student identification. Almost every third-party site describing GEM pricing states that the adult band starts at 18, which is wrong and will cause travellers to overpay or to arrive without the ID their ticket tier assumes.
Bring the identification your tier assumes
Every discounted and free category is conditional on documentation checked at the museum, not at the point of sale. Adults and children need valid ID. Students need a valid student card. The expatriate rate, which is roughly half the foreign rate, requires proof of residency in Egypt as well as ID. Foreign spouses of Egyptian citizens and their children may buy the Egyptian-rate ticket, but must show a marriage certificate or birth certificate. Because tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, a missing document is an expensive problem. Photograph your paperwork before leaving your hotel.
Who gets in free, and what a guide costs
Children under six enter free, as do visitors with disabilities, who are exempt from admission fees throughout the week. Several Egyptian categories also qualify, including tour guides accompanying groups, military veterans and families of martyrs. Exemption covers admission only: if you want the museum's own guided tour, the difference is still payable. That tour runs about two hours in English or Arabic and is sold as a distinct ticket at 2,000 pounds for a foreign adult against 1,500 for plain admission — a 500-pound premium. An audio guide is cheaper at 270 pounds, with 130 stops in Arabic, English, Japanese and German.
A price rise is already scheduled
GEM's board of directors, chaired by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, announced in April 2026 that prices will rise on 1 November 2026. International visitors go up by five US dollars, from roughly thirty to thirty-five. Egyptian adults move from 200 to 220 pounds and Egyptian students and seniors from 100 to 120. Because the foreign rate is set in dollars and charged in pounds, the exact Egyptian-pound figure after November will depend on the exchange rate at the time. If you are travelling in late 2026, check the official platform rather than relying on any published pound figure.
